What is the DoD 8570.01-M?

The DoD 8570 is also known as the Information Assurance Workforce Improvement Program. The Department of Defense passed a regulation stating that all Information Assurance personnel must become compliant with the mandated IT and Security certification standards within a certain time frame.

DoD Directive 8570.1 requires that every full and part-time military service member, defense contractor, and civilian employee with privileged access to Department of Defense systems to obtain industry certification credentials that have been accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

The draft manual, 8570.1M specifies that the Department of Defense requires that approximately 110,000 identified Information Assurance professionals be certified within a five year period. The Defense Information Assurance Program (DIAP) office has divided its Information Worker Assurance workforce into six defined categories. The manual also specifies the types of commercial information assurance credentials that qualify for each of the defined categories.

There are various levels of compliance based on the level of job function. The most common certifications included in the DoD Directive 8570.01 include A+, Network+, Security+ and CISSP. The actual DoD Directive can be found here: http://www.dtic.mil/whs/directives/corres/pdf/857001m.pdf

In summary, the Directive’s objectives are:

  1. Establish standards where Information Assurance (IA) personnel obtain a uniform level of competency with regard to DoD information and networks.
  2. Standardize the minimum skill level for all Information Assurance personnel throughout the DoD
  3. Provide qualified IA Workforce members to the soldiers that need them
  4. Creation of a set of formal training requirements and the establishment of certification programs
  5. Increase the knowledge base of every IA Workforce team member through education and/or experience
